Types of screening mammograms

Prevea Health offers both digital technology and digital technology with 3-D enhancements. Talk to your provider to determine which option is best for you.

Digital technology, also called full field digital mammography (FFDM) or 2-D technology, has been done for years and is a great choice for women with no or low risk of breast cancer. A digital mammogram uses X-rays to produce an image of the breast, but instead of storing the image directly on film, the image is stored directly on a computer. This allows the recorded image to be magnified for the doctor to take a closer look.

3-D mammography (Tomosynthesis) is a recent advancement in breast imaging technology. Clinical studies have shown that mammography screening using 3-D equipment has a higher cancer detection rate when compared to digital mammography. 

The 3-D mammogram is acquired when the X-ray tube moves in an arc and takes multiple pictures in a few seconds. The images show the breast tissue in separate layers, like the pages of a book. The exam takes about the same amount of time as a digital mammogram. Benefits of 3-D mammography: 

• A decrease in the number of women recalled for additional mammogram views. 
• A decrease in the number of breast biopsies with results that are not cancer. 
• An increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. 
• Cancer detection up to 15 months earlier, which improves treatment results.

Any woman can have a 3-D mammogram. It is highly recommended for women who are at high-risk for breast cancer. 

Mammography insurance coverage 

Most screening mammograms are covered by your insurance company or Medicare on an annual basis beginning at age 40. We suggest you check with your insurance company for your specific coverage prior to your appointment. It is the patient’s responsibility to understand coverage provided by their individual health plan and whether any co-pay is required. To obtain that information, call the phone number on your insurance card and ask about the 2-D mammogram procedure code 77067 and the 3-D mammogram procedure code 77063. Most insurance plans cover 3-D screening mammography, but there may be exceptions to 100 percent coverage.
